LAKE EYRE & FLINDERS RANGE
FLYING ADVENTURE
5 Nights and 6 Days
Flight times are only approximate as on the day they will change depending on tail or head winds. Departures are all morning departures as it is the best time of the day to fly.
Day 1
Depart Archerfield/Stanthorpe at 8.30 am for a scenic flight to Charleville where we cross the
Moonie, Balonne and Maranoa Rivers, flight time 2.5 hours. Accommodation Warrego Motel.
Afters arrival we go to the Cosmos for lunch $17.00 per person at the Cosmos Centre.
After lunch we attend the Astronomy by day at 1.30pm..
We visit the Royal Flying Doctors Service.
In 1942 the Charleville Airfield was handed over to the US army Air Corp division. Learn about the 160 aircraft and 3500 US airmen and ground crews who were stationed at Charleville.
Tour of the town of Charleville in the afternoon.
See the famous Historical Hotel Corones and drive along the banks of the Warrego River..
At night 7.30 pm we visit the Cosmos Centre and Night Observatory and see the Astronomy by night and be amazed with real stars and real telescopes.
Day 2
Depart Charleville for a scenic flight over the Channel country on route to Birdsville.
We follow the Cooper Creek which flows into Lake Yamma Yamma , which has an abundance of bird life. Flight time 2.5 hours
Arriving in time to check out the Town of Birdsville a small outback town situated on the Banks of the Diamantina River between the sands of the Simpson Desert and the gibbers of Sturts Stoney Desert and visit the Hospital Museum.
Go on the Big Red Sunset Tour at 4.30 pm .This tour takes you to the edge of the Simpson Desert to Nappanerica Sand Dune, Big Red.
Enjoy and witness a memorable outback sunset on the largest sand dune in Australia, The Big Red whilst having a drink of your choice and nibbles.
Accommodation at the famous Birdsville Hotel and you also dine at the Birdsville Pub.
Day 3
Depart Birdsville and follow the Diamantina River which flows into the Goyder Lagoon then onto the Warburton River. See the Birdsville track, followed by a spectacular flight over Lake Eyre North. After we depart Lake Eyre North we fly over Anna Creek Station, the world’s largest cattle station on route to William Creek.
William Creek is the smallest settlement in South Australia however it sits in the largest Cattle Station in Australia, Anna Creek Station. William Creek Pub is made from the old Sleepers of the Ghan Railway. It’s the half way point for the ruggedly famous Oodnadatta track. Arrive in time for morning tea/lunch and enjoy what an outback pub has to offer. Flight time 2.5 hours
After morning tea we depart William Creek and fly over South Lake Eyre, Old Ghan Route, Birdsville Track on route to Arkaroola at the base of the Flinders Ranges. Flight time 1.6 hours
We will be picked up at Balcanoona Airstrip and transported by vehicle to the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary.
Enjoy the afternoon sight seeing around this wonderful Wilderness Sanctuary.
Arkaroola has over 160 bird species in the area and an abundance of Flora and Fauna.
Day 4
At 8.00am we go on a guided Waterhole tour along the Arkaroola Creek which are designed to give you the best chance of seeing native birds and animals, including the elusive and endangered Yellow-footed Rock wallaby.
Enjoy billy tea and laminations along the beautiful edges of the Waterhole.
This afternoon go on one of the many beautiful walks around Arkaroola or join Sharpie on his Aboriginal plant medicine tour. Learn the life of the Aboriginal people at Arkaroola.
Day 5
Depart Arkaroola at 8.00 am for the drive to Balcanoona Airstrip.
On this flight you will see Lake Frome and the famous Dog fence from the air on route to Bourke for fuel/morning tea. Flight time 2.1 hours.
As you come into Bourke you will see the many cotton fields surrounding Bourke.
Depart Bourke for Lightning Ridge and see the Narran Lakes. Flight time .45 minutes..
1.45 pm is the afternoon tour with Outback Opal Tours.
This tour is for 3 hours and includes the Amigo amazing hand made Castle, The Ridges largest Open cut mine and scenic Three Mile Opal Field, Guided under ground mine tour, Learn all about opals from the local miners.
Day 6
Depart Lightning Ridge for Goondiwindi flying over many cotton fields in the area. Refuel/morning
tea, Flight time approx 1.5 hours. Depart Goondiwindi for Stanthorpe/Archerfield.
